Working Washington's "SuperPAC"

Working Washington is starting up a SuperPAC (People’s Action Committee) to fight back against the 1%, especially on fair taxation and economic justice. This is just what we need in Washington State.  They sent out an email:

You’ve probably heard about SuperPACs. They’re the newest weapon in the political arsenal of the 1%. SuperPACs use big dollar donations to elect politicians who want to push for tax breaks for rich, keep workers in low wage jobs and widen the gap between the richest 1% and the rest of us.

Enough.

It’s time the 99% got our own SuperPAC–a People’s Action Commitee to stand up for the priorities we all hold dear: good jobs, a tax system where everyone pays their fair share and economic justice for all of us.

Help us form a 99% SuperPAC in your neighborhood:

• Redmond: Monday, August 20, 6 pm, Redmond Library
• Greenwood: Tuesday, August 21, 6 pm, Greenwood Library
• Boulevard Park: Thursday, August 23, 6pm, Boulevard Park Library

Join us as we form the 99% SuperPAC and make elected officials put our priorities before the whims of the 1%.

We, together, can hold our elected officials accountable to what’s really important. But it all needs to start somewhere and these next few weeks we’re rolling out events where the 99% will gather, exchange ideas and give the 1% a little something to worry about.

Jobs are scarce. Working folks continue to see their wages stagnate while gas, food and housing costs rise. The rich keep getting richer while the rest of us are barely making ends meet.

Join us and make your voice heard–it starts with us getting together.

We’re fed up and we won’t take it anymore.

The name SuperPAC suggested to me that they were gonna raise money. But that would be hard to do.   On Working Washington’s facebook page I asked “Is your SuperPAC plan intended to raise money? Or to raise consciousness? Or raise hell? The name suggests it’s raising money. Sounds more interesting if it’s an organizing tool to bring progressives and concerned citizens together.”   They responded, “Our SuperPAC=People’s Action Committee. It’s not about money. It’s about putting the priorities of the 99% first. So you can say it’s about raising consciousness/hell. :)”

The Democratic Party and its politicians sure won’t take a lead on progressive issues.  It’s up to us to lead a mass movement demanding fair taxation in Washington State.  We have our work cut out for us, because most voters continue to vote against their own self-interest, as they did in 2010 when they voted against I-1098 (high earner’ income tax) and for I-1053 (Eyman’s super-majority requirement for raising revenue).
