The Seattle Times announced that University of Utah president Mickael K. Young is the expected choice for UW president. The search was conducted by an outside firm in TX that was hired by the university rather than by a search committee of the faculty.

There is still time to protest this. I would like to add a personal opinion that acting president Wise should be selected because (a) she is a prominent scientist and Young has no science and technology background at all, (b) promoting Wise would break the glass ceiling for Asian American women with a Ph.D. in science and would be inspirational.
Do you know who appointed Young? Governor Gregoire?
In the midst of the budget crisis and all of the complaining about UW budget cuts, the university spent money hiring an executive search firm in TX that purported to have expertise in academic placements. You can predict what the result is going to be when they do an end run around their own faculty and allowed a private firm in Texas to control the selection process, with the secrecy that was described in the Times (faculty excluded even from interviewing the candidates). This all took place in TX and probably Gov. Gregoire is reading about this in the newspaper just like everybody else, including the academic deans of UW. I assume the board of trustees hired the Texas company.
