Why: As we strive to build a more just, healthy, and vibrant society and community, we need all the skills possible to be authentic leaders and allies to the most disenfranchised members of our society. As we manifest our aspirations and bring our world in closer resonance with our values we encounter maladaptive dynamics of privilege and oppression within ourselves, our institutions and potential allies. The Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment workshops offers participants the opportunity to deepen skills and develop a framework for addressing oppression. The workshop supports effective activism, teaching, and leadership (in our community and beyond). It helps us reduce burnout and stress related to dynamics of oppression. It helps us increase our effectiveness, be authentic, and have more fun.

Workshop Description
Beyond Inclusion & Empowerment for Activists, Teachers, and Leaders:

What are your hopes and concerns about addressing diversity in your work and in your life? What opportunities and risks do you face?

Margot Boyer Beyond Inlcusion, Beyond Empowerment Author &TrainerBeyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment offers a flexible and accepting strategy for understanding and responding to difficult issues. This framework allows us to make sense of the complex dynamics of Status, Rank, and Power. We learn to identify the skills we ourselves have access to, notice the skills others use, and foster the development of more effective skills to address the problems of privilege and oppression. The work is especially useful for activists, leaders, teachers, counselors, and anyone who works in groups.

Facilitator Margot Boyer taught at North Seattle Community College for ten years and lives on Vashon. She is a co-author with Leticia Nieto et. al. of Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment: A Developmental Model to Liberate Everyone.
