Now is the time to be angry and to act: protests are getting coverage

Take over your LD!  Educate the public about the harmfulness of conserva-think.

Protests at congressional offices have been getting a lot of press coverage.

Reichert’s remarks (let the system work) didn’t address the issues.

More protests are planned — for example, Aug 10.

Now is not the time to be despondent.  Now is the time to be angry. Now is the time to educate the public about the injustices of conservative policies. Now is the time to elect progressives and kick conservatives and centrists out of office.

  1. I would like to tell a story about educating the public. The first college I attended was Penn, and I wrote for the Daily Pennsylvanian. (My first degree is in journalism.) The DP Alumni Association was in correspondence with alumni because of the reunions. In the course of this, I wrote to the current acting editor-in-chief about the need for students on campus to engage in activism to protect their future Social Security and Medicare. I expressed awareness that this was the farthest thing from these young people’s minds, but that their survival in old age was at stake.

I could not believe the response I received. She said that if they ever came across any relevent legislation on the subject, they would consider it. In other words, this was the editor-in-chief of an Ivy League newspaper and she had no clue about the battle going on with the debt repayment liit legislation vis a vis Social Security and Medicare. I explained to her what was going on, but I was in a state of shock.

I think the young labor unionists at the SEIU jobs rally are the real leaders. I don’t even know what to think about badly university education is failing if one of the allegedly best informed students in the country doesn’t know what is going on.
