Women versus Men in the 2016 election

The image below (original source unknown) is outrageous and politically incorrect. But it’s also funny and insightful.

Women versus men in support for Hillary or Trump

The gender-divide in the support for Hillary versus Trump is extreme. As of mid-October, Hillary was ahead by 20 points among women, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, while Trump leads among men:

Looking inside the numbers of the two-way horse race, Clinton holds a 20-point lead among female voters (55 percent to 35 percent), while Trump is ahead among men by just three points (48 percent to 45 percent).

Clinton also has the advantage among African Americans (86 percent to 9 percent), non-white voters (76 percent to 16 percent) and those ages 18-34 (54 percent to 36 percent).

Trump, meanwhile, holds the edge among independents (41 percent to 36 percent) and white voters (51 percent to 40 percent). But there is a difference among whites: Those without college degrees prefer Trump by a 56 percent-to-36 percent margin, while those with college degrees break evenly between Trump and Clinton, 45 percent to 45 percent.

Some Trump supporters may think that men who vote for Hillary are being henpecked into voting for her (as the image above suggests).

Just as racial bias partly explains the opposition to President Obama, gender bias no doubt partly explains the opposition to Hillary.

Of course, Trump’s mistreatment of women, and his frequent insulting and degrading comments towards women, offended many people.

The majority of voters are women (at least in Washington State). Let’s hope women save us from Trump and from GOP control of the state senate.  In the 41st LD, both state representatives are women (Clibborn and Senn).  If Lisa Wellman can defeat Steve Litzow, women will make a clean sweep and that may be enough to flip the senate.

GOP PAC is trying to shame people into voting

Someone from the Woodridge area of Bellevue received a flier which included the following:

Republican mailing tries to shame people into voting

It says

WHAT IF YOUR NEIGHBORS KNEW WHETHER YOU VOTED?

We’re sending this mailing with a list of who does and does not vote in your area.

The chart shows the names of your neighbors, showing which have voted in the past. After the November 8th election, we intend to update our chart to let you know how you’re doing…..

Paid for by the GOPAC Education Fund.

GOPAC’s website is at http://www.gopac.org/, with the tagline “Educating and Electing a New Generation of Republican Leaders.”

I read about sociology experiments which suggest that when things like voting behavior are made public and shared with neighbors, people tend to to act to protect their reputation.

I bet the GOPAC people are targeting Republican-leaning areas, or voters, with these mailings. Indeed, I looked at the 2012 election results from the Secretary of State’s office and I can see that for precinct 41-0111 (which is part of Woodridge), Republican Steve Litzow beat Democrat Maureen Judge 255 to 188.  But in Woodridge precinct 41-124, Maureen Judge won 211 votes to 208.

Whom you voted for is private information. But it’s public knowledge when you last voted. Anyone can download the database from the state Secretary of State’s office. For example, I’m a programmer and database developer, and I downloaded the database and wrote the following articles, using data from the database:

Republican Litzow is running against Trump, because 61% of 41st LD voters voted for Obama in 2012

Why women — especially older women — rule in Washington State

In fact, it’s outrageous but the database has all voters’ names, addresses, date of last vote, and birth dates.     I fear it’s being used for purposes of identity theft. When you download the database you have to promise to use it only for political purposes and not for commercial purposes. But that won’t deter criminals.

On the nextdoor.com social networks, lots of people are upset about the GOPAC mailer. One person said that she knows people who can’t register to vote because there’s a stalker who could use the public address to harass them.

GOPAC also did voter shaming in Vancouver, WA according to GOP ‘Voter-shaming’ flier left in Vancouver woman’s mailbox.

Similarly in Arizona:  Allhands: Republicans want to shame you into voting.

Republican Litzow is running against Trump, because 61% of 41st LD voters voted for Obama in 2012

I got a campaign flier in the mail, from the pro-charter school Stand for Children WA PAC. The flier shows 41st LD Republican State Senator Steve Litzow saying “Never Trump.” Another campaign flier calls Litzow a “progressive leader.”

Litzow is trying to portray himself as a moderate, despite his being a loyal Republican, having voted with his caucus 98% of the time (and especially when the votes are important).

Indeed, Litzow is too conservative for his district, the 41st, which voted for Obama in 2012, with 45,899 votes for Obama to Romney’s 29,239. In other words, 61.1% of 41st LD voters preferred Obama over Romney.  See here too. Statewide Obama won 56% of the votes in 2012.

Likewise, in 2012 among 41st LD voters Democrat Adam Smith beat Republican challenger Jim Postma 34,829 to 19,512 (64% for Smith), and Senator Maria Cantwell beat Michael Baumgartner 47,129 to 27,167 (63.4% for Cantwell).

Steve Litzow says 'Never Trump' in an effort to appear moderate

Litzow won his seat in 2010 largely due to attack ads funded by the Koch brothers.

This summer Litzow lost in the primary to his Democratic challenger, Lisa Wellman.

Also, on my smart phone I got text messages from a strange phone number, 425-598-3903, with links to youtube videos from James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas. The videos accuse Democrats of rigging the elections and of planting violent activists at Trump rallies. CNBC is reporting that the Trump Foundation paid O’Keefe to make the video. Earlier, O’Keefe had worked with Andrew Breitbart and attacked ACORN, using highly edited and deceptive videos.

Steve Litzow: Neck Deep in Debt to the Upper Class (95 second video)

According to letsfreecongress.com, in the 2012 US House elections, 95% of the candidates that outspent their opponents won, and 1% of the donors contributed 68% of the campaign funding.

In 2010, spending by Charles and David Koch’s Americans for Prosperity unseated Democrats Eric Oemig and Randy Gordon from the Washington State Senate in the 41st and 45th LD, replacing them with Republicans Steve Litzow and Andy Hill.  (The State Republican Party was later fined for violating election reporting requirements in that election.  See also How the Koch Brothers worked to defeat Democrats in Washington State.)  Litzow beat Gordon by about 200 votes, because of last minute attack ads.

The Washington State Public Disclosure Commission lists contributions to Litzow’s campaign. Contributions include, among others,

ACLI (American Council of Life Insurers) POLITICAL ACTIVITY FUND:  $1000.
ALLSTATE INSURANCE CO  $1000

Letter to the editor in Bellevue Reporter, on attack ads and Litzow

On the day the primary election ballots arrived in my mailbox, I also received an attack ad, from a group opposed to 41st LD state Senate candidate Lisa Wellman. Wow, they’re starting early this year! In 2010 her opponent, Steve Litzow, won by about 200 votes because of last-minute attack ads sent out by an organization funded by the Koch Brothers; at least they waited til right before the general election. Unfortunately, attack ads tend to work, regardless of the accuracy of their content.

Here’s hoping that Washington State voters wise up and realize that the Republican policies serve the few, by burdening us with regressive taxes. For example, did you know that Republicans actually raised your taxes? The regressive gas tax just went up a nickel and will rise again next year [Oops. I got that wrong. It rose last year. My apologies.] Republicans are OK with regressive taxes, such as the gas tax and the sales tax. But they vehemently oppose closing tax loopholes that favor the rich, and they oppose taxing capital gains.

Microsoft & Boeing receive billions in tax breaks, fund astro-turf groups

There were big endorsements for Steve Litzow, Jay Inslee and others who support charter schools. The endorsements came from the charter-schools-loving League of Education Voters, which is funded by Microsoft, Boeing, the Seattle Foundation, the Gates Foundation, and others. Follow the money. Boeing and Microsoft enjoy massive tax breaks and use their money to fund astro-turf groups that buy campaign ads.

League of Education Voters backs Inslee, top Republicans.

The LEV also endorsed Democratic legislators who support charter schools, including Tana Senn and Judy Clibborn.

Follow the money.  The scam basically works like this. In exchange for the billions in tax breaks they receive, Gates, Microsoft and Boeing fund campaign ads via innocent-sounding astro-turf groups such as League of Education Voters and Stand for Children.  The ads will show attractive, smiling, obedient children sitting in classrooms and listening to the teacher.

Contrary to the statement in the article, Gates, Boeing, and Microsoft are not independent at all. They’re self-interested tools of the 1%, intent on dismantling public education, attacking unions, and blaming teachers for outcomes that are the result of poverty and willful under-funding of education. Republicans and their neo-liberal Democratic allies under-fund government so it doesn’t work well and so that they can justify tax cuts for rich people and privatization of government services.

This is all at the expense of the middle class  and the poor, who pay the vast majority of state taxes here in Washington State, due to our regressive tax system.

Despite the $8.7 billion in tax breaks, Boeing still shipped jobs out-of-state.  See Tax-subsidized Boeing Co. snubs state again. Boeing profits enormously from government subsidies via its military business.  But it still avoids paying taxes.

Heck, Inlee’s major “accomplishments” as Governor are: handing $8.7 billion to Boeing and letting the charter school bill become law.

The charter schools bill, SB 6194, is in violation of the State Constitution; last year the state Supreme Court ruled that charter schools are unconstitutional. The bill steals money from public education at a time when the legislature is in contempt of court for not adequately funding public schools (McCleary decision).

The charter schools bill is also contrary to the state Democratic Party platform which states “We oppose charter schools.”

The following article about Bill Gates and his meddling in education policy helps explain why so many legislators continue to push for charter schools: Charitable Plutocracy: Bill Gates, Washington State and the Nuisance of Democracy.
